Samsung may disable wireless charging

Samsung has been using Qi charging standards in its technological products for years. However, a lawsuit in the US revealed that the company violated several patents. Accordingly, the company may have to disable wireless charging technologies with a software update.

Samsung will pay $192 million in damages after losing a patent infringement lawsuit related to wireless charging technology. The lawsuit, filed by Mojo Mobility, found that Samsung infringed five patents related to Qi charging standards.

The US court ruled that Samsung “knowingly infringed” Mojo Mobility’s patents. Accordingly, a heavy penalty should be imposed. Mojo Mobility’s patents cover wireless charging technologies used in Samsung’s various devices such as smartphones, smartwatches and headphones.

If Samsung does not appeal the ruling, it may have to disable wireless charging features in its existing products with a software update. However, experts said it is likely that the company will appeal the decision and the legal process will continue for years.

Samsung has faced many patent lawsuits in the past and has devoted significant resources to its defense. Of course, the future of wireless charging technologies is uncertain for now. Samsung may need to redesign its wireless technology in a way that does not violate Mojo Mobility’s intellectual property rights.
